Young Adult (YA)

Word Categories

An age label for fiction, indicating that a book is intended for an audience in the 12-18 age range.

As an age label, Young Adult can be paired with any genre. (E.g. Young Adult Fantasy or Young Adult Mystery.)

Some typical features of Young Adult fiction are an adolescent protagonist discovering their identity, strengths, and self-worth; and themes such as friendship, love, family relationships, authority, peer pressure, experimentation, school, and first jobs.

Successful Young Adult fiction also takes care to present issues from the young reader's perspective without trivializing them, and uses vocabulary and writing style appropriate for the audience.
