liquid-crystal display (LCD)
A type of display consisting of a backlight behind a grid of pixels that are darkened to produce an image.
A typical computer, mobile phone, or tablet screen is an LCD.
The advantages of LCDs are their high resolution, full-colour capability, and high refresh rates that allow for viewing video and animation.
However, because of the backlight, an LCD uses power whenever it is lit. Viewing an LCD in direct sunlight requires a very powerful backlight, which draws even more power. This is the primary disadvantage of an LCD.
